Fiddler's Ferry is a coal-fired power station located on the north bank of the River Mersey, between Widnes and Warrington in Cheshire.
The power station has eight cooling towers 112.8m high, four each side of the turbine hall, plus a 201.2m high central chimney. One of the cooling towers collapsed on Friday 13th January 1984 as a result of a defect in its concrete wall, exacerbated by high winds. It was rebuilt later.
Four 500MW generating units provide the power stationís 2,000MW output. It burns 16,000 tonnes of bituminous coal every day. This produces ash, which is collected from the bottom of the boilers and some of it is used in construction projects. The station takes 195 million litres of cooling water from the River Mersey daily.
Fiddlerís Ferry Power Station was built by the Central Electricity Generating Board. It has since been operated by PowerGen (1990 to July 1999), Edison Mission Energy (July 1999 to December 2001) and AEP Energy Services (December 2001 to July 2004). The current operating company is Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE).
In line with UK government advice, some power is generated by co-firing biomass in two of the four generating units. The biomass includes olive pellets, palm kernel expellers, citrus pulp pellets and wood. In 2006, SSE spent more than £10m installing direct injection burners to increase the efficiency of co-firing. This should enable up to 30 percent of the fuel for the two co-fired units to be biomass.
Between July 2006 and early 2008, three flue gas desulphurisation plants were installed at a cost of £11.5m. Each will reduce sulphur dioxide emissions by 94 percent, to comply with the EU Large Combustion Plant directive.
Flue gases are reheated to more than 80 degrees Celsius and an alkaline limestone scrubbing system removes the acidic sulphur dioxide. The residual liquid contains gypsum, which is recovered, and the treated water is discharged through an existing outfall.
SSE aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions at Fiddlerís Ferry by 50 percent, compared with 2005-06 levels, by 2019-20 ó around 12 million tonnes.
