A road bridge of red sandstone, commissioned by Peter Dixon, owner of Shaddon Mill in Carlisle. Dixon lived at Holme Eden Hall, which is not far from the site.
Dixon thought the state of the original bridge on this site to be dangerous, so he employed Francis Giles to inspect it. Giles was engineer to the Newcastle & Carlisle Railway, then under construction nearby. Giles recommended replacement and submitted an estimate.
The bridge was under the jurisdiction of Cumberland County Council. Following a dispute between Peter Dixon and William Sanderson, the then County Bridgemaster, Giles submitted a second revised estimate for the work. He lowered his price by reducing the width of the proposed bridge.
The bridge was constructed by William Smith Denton, who was a contractor on the Newcastle & Carlisle Railway, and by John Dobson. It has three elegant segmental arches measuring 22.9m, 24.4m and 22.9m in span. The rise of the central arch is 3.35m and the outer arches 3.1m. The bridge's deck is 7.3m wide.
Ashlar red sandstone has been used for construction. A single ring of voussoir stones runs around each arch, cut to suit the horizontal courses they support. A prominent round-nosed string course runs below the stone parapets. Both upstream and downstream faces of the bridge feature heavily-built rounded cutwaters as protection from damage when the river is full.
Warwick Bridge carries the A69(T) road between Carlisle and Brampton over the River Eden some four miles east of Carlisle, just to the west of the village of Warwick Bridge.
