Beach Lighthouse at Fleetwood is one of a pair of onshore lighthouses. They point the way to the Wyre Light, which stands on sandbanks about two miles offshore. The other shore light is the Pharos.
Beach Lighthouse, also known as the Lower Light, was designed by Denham in conjunction with the architect Decimus Burton, who laid out the town of Fleetwood as well as designing some of its most important buildings.
The town was created by the Preston & Wyre Railway as the northern terminus of its branch line from the West Coast main line, which at that time only went as far north as Preston. From Fleetwood, there was access by boat to Glasgow, the Isle of Man, Barrow-in-Furness, and Belfast. The town was virtually put out of business during the late 1840s with the extension of the West Coast line to Glasgow.
Both onshore lighthouses are built of finely worked sandstone. Beach Lighthouse has an octagonal lantern sitting on a square section that sits in turn on a larger square base. The base has sandstone columns, making it the most architecurally ornate of the town's three lights. The lamp is 44ft above half-tide level. It was originally gas fired but is now electric.
The two onshore lighthouses were first lit on 1st December 1840 and are now maintained by Wyre Borough Council.
