An obelisk marks the birthplace of William Symington, inventor and pioneer of the use of steam engines in shipping.
Unveiled on 12 June 1891, 60 years after Symington's death, the granite memorial was produced by Glasgow sculptors Mossman & Co. It is decorated with brass panels depicting Symington in portrait, and his successful steamboat, the Charlotte Dundas II.
