Piercebridge Roman Bridge

date  circa 100 AD
era  Roman  |  category  Bridge  |  reference  NZ213155
photo  Jane Joyce
The ruins of a Roman bridge that carried the Roman road across the River Tees to a military camp at Piercebridge. The Tees has since both narrowed and changed its course.
The massive masonry blocks that formed the piers of the bridge lie in what is now a field adjoining the river. The lower courses of one of the abutments still stand, partially complete.
Apart from the piers and abutments, Piercebridge Roman Bridge was constructed from timber, all of which has disappeared.
