Memorial to the Duke of Bridgewater
Ashridge House, Berkhamsted Common, Hertfordshire
associated engineer
Duke of Bridgewater III
date  1832
era  Georgian  |  category  Monument, historical  |  reference  SP969131
Obelisk erected on the family's Ashridge Estate as a memorial to Francis Egerton, the third and last Duke of Bridgewater (1736-1803).
Bridgewater is known as the father of the British inland navigation on account of his commission for the canal between Manchester and Liverpool, engineered by James Brindley and known as the Bridgewater Canal.
Bridgewater acted in opposition to his family and under considerable financial difficulty; he himself left the necessary funds for the erection of the monument after his death.
