Birthplace of Sir John Fowler (1817 - 98), who worked on the engineering of the London Underground railway system. He was instrumental in the construction of the Firth of Forth railway bridge (1882-90).
Fowler was made president of the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1866 and a baronet in 1890.
