Birthplace of Thomas Savery (1650-1715), a military engineer and pioneering developer of the steam engine.
His engine was developed in response to the constant problem of pumping water out of local mines and was not itself a success, but his patents (1698) were inclusive and relevant enough to require negotiation when his contemporary and near neighbour, Thomas Newcomen, produced an effective model. Henceforth, Savery and Newcomen worked together.
