Birthplace of John Wilkinson (1728-1808), the ironmaster whose most exciting contribution to technology was the boring engine.
This he produced in 1774 for the purpose of making cannons, but it was later and more importantly used in the construction of steam engine cylinders.
Wilkinson was a great experimenter with iron, pioneering its use in a wide range of fields. One of James Watts' engines was designed for Wilkinson's ironworks.
