An open-air arena next to the canal in Castlefield, adjoining the visitors' centre. The seating echoes that of an amphitheatre.
The Arena consists of a west-facing terrace of curved, precast concrete steps. All except the front row of the terrace is protected by a peaked fabric canopy, supported on a triangular steel frame. This is set at a tilt, lowest over the back row of seats.
The open, York-stone stage stretches from the terraces to the canal bank. Low walls of red sandstone surround the seating to the sides and across one half of the rear, and a sandstone bunker stands behind. This structure contains the control room and supports a lighting tower. Steep steps of green lawn back the unwalled half of the seating bank.
