Twelve Apostles Stone Circle
Dumfries
associated engineer
Anon
date  not known
era  Pre-Roman  |  category  Monument, historical  |  reference  NX947794
The largest stone circle in mainland Scotland and the fifth largest in Britain. Eleven of the original, flattened stones remain.
The maximum estimated diameter of the site is 88m, and one stone is thought to be missing. Only five of the stones are still upright, the tallest of these reaching 1.9m. The longest lies fallen at 3.2m.
The breadth of the circle is hard to appreciate on sight, as it lies close to the road and is bisected by a modern field boundary.
