date  1847
era  Victorian  |  category  Bridge  |  reference  TM455994
ICE reference number  HEW 192
This typical cast-iron bowstring bridge is the only one of its kind in East Anglia. It spans an 80ft width of the River Waveney, and carries the A143 road.
The arch of the bowstring girders rises to a central height of 15ft from the deck. The two arched girders themselves are a composite lattice assembly measuring 2ft 6in high and 2ft 3in wide, each formed from four ribs bolted at every five feet with cast iron braces.
In 1959, steel joists replaced the cast-iron cross-girders which originally supported the deck.
