Market Square, Ripon, North Yorkshire

This is the earliest free-standing obelisk in the UK. It was designed by the architect Nicholas Hawksmoor, famous for his East London churches.
The obelisk is part of Ripon's "new" market square, which took its shape from that of a Roman forum, the obelisk replacing an old market cross.
It was restored and remodelled in 1781.
