Robert Stevenson lived at 1 Baxter Place for the last 20 years of his life, and died here on 12th June 1850.
Not to be confused with the engineer of the Rocket, the English Robert Stephenson (1803-59), this Stevenson was engineer for the Scottish Lighthouse Board, for whom he built 20 lighthouses including Bell Rock. He invented intermittent and flashing warning lights and was instrumental in the development of modern rails, and the hydrophone.
His son, Thomas Stevenson, also became an engineer and fathered the author, Robert Louis Stevenson.
