First President of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Thomas Telford was born on a sheep farm in a remote park of Eskdale in Dumfriesshire. The cottage where he was born is now in ruins.
Telford's father, John, died four months after Thomas's birth and his mother Janet brought him up. He went to school locally and then began his long career in construction with a stone-mason apprenticeship.
There are stones in Langholm Bridge (1778) that bear masonry marks said to be his.
