The graceful masonry arches of Pant y Goitre Bridge carry the B4598 road from Llanvihangel Gobion over the River Usk in south Wales. The unusual design of its spandrels features radial jointing and cylindrical voids. Well maintained and now Grade II* listed, it remains in continual use.
The bridge was designed and built by John Upton (c.1774-1853), Country Road Surveyor of Gloucestershire. He also constructed nearby Llanelan Bridge (SO305109) in 1823-26, to the design of the Monmouthshire County Surveyor Thomas Waters. Upton was not the most reliable of engineers, having skipped bail in 1826 over prosecution for fraudulent claims when he was in charge of the London to Holyhead Road in Northamptonshire, and fleeing to Russia in 1828 to escape his creditors.
Pant y Goitre is 61m long and 5.9m wide between parapets. It it was built to carry the former turnpike road from Abergavenny to Usk, and it takes its roadway on a long smooth gentle curve over the river.
The bridge is of red sandstone and has three semi-elliptical segmental arches, a central span of 17.7m and side spans of 11.9m. The spandrel walls are pierced by cylindrical voids near the springing, six in total, which go right through the structure. Larger voids, 2.7m in diameter, are located between the arch springings above each pier. Unusually, the masonry joints in the spandrel walls are laid radially to the arch rather than horizontally.
The piers, founded on elongated hexagonal bases, include straight pointed cutwaters on both sides below the arch springings.
Each abutment is pierced by a 2.7m diameter cylindrical void, similar to those above the river piers, to enable flood waters to pass more easily. The abutment wing walls curve outwards and terminate in a semi-cylindrical pilaster rising from foundation level.
Pant y Goitre was Grade II* listed in 2005, "for its special interest as a very elegantly designed three arch bridge from the turnpike age".
